At St Mark’s Primary School we believe that all our children have the right to a broad, balanced and diverse curriculum that is engaging, relevant and rooted in the unique context of our school and vision - drawing on its culture, heritage and community. This will equip them with the key skills and knowledge needed in order for them to flourish and to achieve their full potential. All staff are continually developing the curriculum that we provide for our children to ensure we are preparing them for the next stage of their education and for later life, enabling children to nurture and begin to fulfil their hopes and aspirations.
Our main aim is to provide stimulating, meaningful child-led projects in which the children become fully absorbed, using a cross-curricular approach. We strive to encompass many curriculum subjects into each project, making them relevant and meaningful for our children, in order for them to make a positive contribution to the community in which they live and within the wider world.
We aim to foster the best possible development of each child emotionally, academically, physically, socially and spiritually, considering their own unique abilities and aptitudes, allowing them to acquire a wide range of skills in a caring, secure and well-ordered environment. Children’s positive behaviours are underpinned by the school’s core Christian values: Hope, Honesty, Friendship, Forgiveness and Perseverance.
The Bath and Wells Multi Academy Trust approach to the curriculum is to support and enable all our schools to provide a curriculum that:
- Is tailored to meet the needs of St Mark’s, our context, a large primary school located within the rapidly growing village of Worle, joined to the seaside town of Weston-Super-Mare and our pupils, who come from a wide range of economically diverse households.
- Is made unique to our school, drawing on local culture, heritage and community. Examples of this include recognising local culturally significant events and places, such as Worle during WW2, the Victorian seaside town of Weston-Super-Mare, carnival and the history of Steep Holm.
- Provides experience of and connections to the world beyond our school, through a variety of trips, visits and external visitors, whilst also opening our school to the local community during events, such as Remembrance and charity fundraising. In addition, we are closely linked to the local church, have twinned one of our toilets with a toilet in Zambia and take part in the WEBOX appeal for Albania.
- Provides a broad range of creative learning experiences to develop children’s moral, spiritual, social, mental, physical and cultural understanding through planned visits, clubs taking part in adventurous activities during Year 6 residential, opportunities to take part in a full calendar of competitive and non-competitive sports events, enjoying close links with the local churches and taking part in music events alongside the local community.
- Provides opportunities for pupils to understand and develop our five core Christian values – Hope, Honesty, Friendship, Forgiveness and Perseverance. These are celebrated within worship and throughout the curriculum.
- Is ambitious for all pupils, which is shown through staff commitment to continual curriculum development and improvement by completing rigorous self-assessment.
- Recognises, celebrates and welcomes each of our pupils as a unique individual, which is captured by our vision statement ‘Let Your Light Shine’ and shown by our mission statement ‘To help children achieve their best on their learning journey’.
- Helps pupils to develop their sense of identity and belonging so they can make a positive contribution to society actively promoting the fundamental British vales of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.
- Secures pupils' core skills, knowledge and understanding to at least an age appropriate level and beyond, and is adapted, designed and developed for pupils with additional learning needs or disabilities.
- Provides both coverage of the National Curriculum and appropriate progression from EYFS to Y6 and beyond. This is underpinned by clear and thorough skills and knowledge progressions for each subject, that allow for smooth transition between year groups, building on previous learning and making connections with new learning.
- Is flexible and responds to pupils’ ideas, creativity, curiosity and feedback, alongside evaluations of how well pupils learn. This is achieved through careful monitoring, effective marking and feedback strategies and opportunities to conference with children as a whole class, in small groups or on a 1:1 basis.
At St Mark's Primary School, all teachers are responsible for providing an inclusive curriculum that is differentiated for those with Special Educational Needs or Disabilities (SEND). We have high expectations for all pupils and are committed to ensuring our curriculum complies with the Equality Act 2010 and the Special Educational Needs and Disability Regulations 2014.

Children in the Foundation Stage follow the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum of which the three prime areas are:
- Communication & Language
- Physical Development
- Personal, Social and Emotional development
These support learning in four specific areas:
- Understanding the World
- Expressive Arts & Design
Key Stage 1 and 2
All year groups follow the statutory guidance provided in the National Curriculum which was introduced in 2014. Objectives for each year group are provided below. Our RE curriculum is taught in accordance with aspects of the agreed North Somerset syllabus ‘Awareness, Mystery and Value’ and following the 'Understanding Christianity' scheme of work.
Within the project-based approach, children are encouraged to suggest lines of enquiry for the class to follow while including many different subjects through cross-curricular work. During the project, children take part in a WOW activity, which could include trips, visitors, visits, project days and immersive activities to broaden the curriculum and give purposeful links for the children.
Throughout the year, the children all come off timetable to take part in specialist theme weeks such as Arts Week, Science Week and Sports Week to fully broaden and enhance the curriculum the children are experiencing.
Additional to this, every term starts with a Mystery Monday, where each class receives a secret item that informs the day’s work. The children suggest and choose the activities they take part in making the work relevant and inspiring for the children.
